7 Reasons an About Me Page Will Make Your Blog Better
Your About Me page is one of the most essential pages on your site and it will be a big part of your brand, blog and business. That’s why I decided to dedicate a whole post on why it’s so important to have it and how it helps you.
So many bloggers spend years without writing more than a few paragraphs about themselves somewhere on the blog and without telling their story. I don’t want you to make the same mistake.
The first thing you can do wrong with your About page (and a big blogging and branding mistake) is not actually making it interesting and engaging. The other struggles new mom bloggers have with this include:
- not showing how they look like (meaning, no real photos of themselves);
- not revealing their true personality;
- making it all about themselves (you’ll see why an About page is not just about you).
Before writing your About page, you must first understand what role it plays in your brand and the online business you’re starting.
Why Have a Great About Me Page
1. It builds trust.
Most things online are about trust. If people buy from someone or even subscribe to their newsletter or invest time in reading their content, they need to know and trust the person. Both of these can be achieved with a killer About Me page.
I know that from experience. When I accidentally land on a great article on a new blog or see the blog name mentioned by someone else I trust online, I immediately head to this new person’s About page to see what they are all about.
Often I get to see these amazing stories of individuals who were once dissatisfied with their life, started taking action in order to change that, started an online business, then left their country or did something else that transformed their lifestyle.
My About page (on Let’s Reach Success, my main site) shares exactly that. It took a long time to make it that long, but now I update it frequently by removing unnecessary paragraphs or pieces of information and adding new things I’m working on or changes I’m making in my life.
The one on Blogging with Lidiya, which you can check out here, is quite different. This site is quite niche, we focus only on blogging, and my ideal reader is every mom who’s starting, growing or monetizing a blog.
So after introducing myself and sharing my expertise in this field, I also talk about why I started this site and about the beginning of my motherhood journey.
I also cover who this blog is for, why blogging isn’t dead and what women can expect around here.
2. You can connect with your readers.
To be honest, I’d easily leave a blog if there’s no About Me page.
That tells me the person doesn’t care much about sharing their story and connecting with the reader but just wants me to read their content and make money from my clicks on their ads or by buying their product.
But connection is important in the online world and in our case, it happens through words.
By having an About page sharing the ups and downs in your life so far, your aspirations and what you’re trying to achieve with this blog, you can turn one-time visitors into loyal readers, make friends and inspire.
I’ve received many emails from people who did something similar to me in life, and contacted me to tell me that. It always happened after reading my story on the About Me page on Let’s Reach Success.
Getting these emails is such a joy. It’s a reminder that my story (and anyone else’s) matters and must be shared.
3. Your About page can convert visitors into subscribers.
It can be long and optimized. You can link to it often from content in different categories and even rank it for some keywords.
If your name becomes a brand too one day, your About page will probably be the first thing Google shows to users.
If it’s compelling and well-structured, you can turn it into a money-making page or one directly related to growing your brand.
That means embedding opt-in forms, inviting readers to follow you on socials, mentioning your product and how it was a turning point in your online business, or linking to how-to guides on your site that are important and contain affiliate links.
4. Brands are all about telling a story.
Stories are powerful and every big brand or successful individual online has one. Most importantly, they have told it in an engaging way.
Big startups were created in tiny dorm rooms. Work-at-home moms making $10K a month were once having a low-paying job and a baby on the way.
You will also have a story to tell a year from now. But you have a background, have learned some important life lessons, know you want more in life, are learning how to make money blogging, and have actually started your own blog. That’s enough content for the first version of your About page.
But how you tell the story is equally important. It means being honest. Using your unique writing voice. Sharing deep stuff as if you’re talking to a friend but also making jokes here and there (if that’s your personality).
That way you won’t create the wrong impression. And you’ll also know that the people who do become loyal readers, subscribe to your newsletter and leave comments on your About page or under blog posts, resonate with your story and know you a bit more.
5. A chance to position yourself as an expert.
Once you’ve had some initial success with blogging, your About page will become even more important. It’s where people will stop by to check out how you started as a blogger. Your beginning will inspire them to take the first step too.
By sharing what platforms you’ve contributed to, what product you’ve launched, how many articles you’ve written or what successful projects you’ve worked on, you can build authority in your niche.
Your About page is the perfect place on your site to talk about all this.
6. It tells readers what the blog is really about.
Remember how I said this page is not just about you? It’s about your readers first.
Together with telling them who you are and how you started, you will also discuss the reason why you started this blog, what it covers, and how it can help them change their lives.
When they hear it from you, they will understand the mission behind the site, the benefits your content brings, and how great your products or services are.
This is where you can talk about the problems you’re trying to solve in your niche and what makes your blog stand out, which makes your About page one of the best landing pages on your site.
You’re promoting yourself and your platform in the most genuine way – by showing what you do and why you do it.
7. You grow as a blogger.
One of the hard parts of the blogging journey is getting your name and story out there.
For example, adding a photo of yourself might not be something you’re comfortable with. But once you do, you’ll be eager to add a few more from your travels or with family a few months from now.
Writing a 1000-word story about yourself isn’t easy either, but it’s a mental barrier you have to overcome. What’s more, that helps you put things in perspective and see where you come from and compare it to where you’re headed.
In addition, simply writing this and updating it frequently is yet another exercise that helps you define your blog mission and know why you do what you do.
